Today’s hair is big, bold, and color. Nowadays people often choose a bold look that is characterized by just some small highlights. Hairstyles such as these can also be achieved using a variety of techniques including highlighting sections of the hair with jewelry, accessories or paint. The new trend in nail art includes large metallic studs accompanying various colored nails to create an eye-catching look. “The look I am trying to create is a little bit of grunge but not too grungy. Something edgy and cool,” says Alaina Danner, a sophomore at Cuyahoga Community College.
Throwback hairstyles have experienced somewhat of a revival in recent years, with the fashions and trends from many decades ago returning to style. The biggest throwback to the 1960’s is the popular hairstyle called the beehive. The beehive hairstyle was one of the most popular styles in the 1960’s and 1970’s. The long, thick hair usually had bangs and neck pieces that extended down over the collar. This is a style that is still sometimes seen today as well as a major trend.
Another retro hairstyle is called a winged-out haircut. This style originated with white women attempting to emulate black styles, but now it has become a general hair “craze”. The hair is parted in the middle and back is cut longer on each side and then layered. Sometimes the hair is left long and combed over. This style was popular in the 1960’s but has made a comeback in recent years as well.
One of the more popular trends that has returned to style is asymmetrical haircuts. The asymmetrical haircut is one that includes longer locks on one side of the head and shorter, choppy locks on the other side. This style has come back into style. In the past decade or so, lots of celebrities have sported this look, including Miley Cyrus, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale.
In the early 2000s there was a trend towards how people wore their hair curly. Previously it had been common to wear hair curly but with a little shape. Models like Jennifer Garner wore their curls wavy with no defined shape and no gel or other product to hold the curls in place.
